DescriptionCotton fragment woodblock printed with a repeating floral and ribbon pattern. Printed in madder colors (reds, purple, black) with pencilled yellow, blue, and green (yellow over blue). Fragment is made up of several lengths of fabric sewn together.Label TextThough India was historically the center of cotton textile printing, by the mid-1700s, block-printed textiles were being made in England. This example resembles designs documented by John Holker (1719-1786), in an early act of industrial espionage- gathering information on British textiles on behalf of the French.1780-1785
