DescriptionCandlestick with detachable nozzle.Label TextVarious patterns of figured candlesticks in the rococo taste were made in sterling during the 1740s and 1750s. The stems of this handsome set, quite rare in fused silverplate, are based on a pattern made primarily, though not exclusively, by John Cafe of London, a specialist candlestick-maker. Their bases, however, depart from those of most figured candlesticks in sterling of this period, which are usually shorter, more heavily scrolled, and of shaped triangular plan. This difference may be due in part to the increased interior area needed for loading, since these candlesticks, unlike their substantial cast counterparts in sterling, are made almost entirely of relatively thin die-stamped parts. Wenham illustrates an identical plated candlestick, marked "IR," believed to be by John Rowbotham & Co. of Sheffield.
