DescriptionDish cross with burner and burner lid. A) Dish cross; B) Burner; C) Burner lid.Label TextThe dish cross, usually fitted with a central lamp, combines the advantages of the dish ring or stand and the chafing dish. Its adjustable arms lend it added flexibility. Dish crosses of this early form appear in English silver in the 1730s. London examples of 1738/39 by Paul Crespin and of 1739/40 by James Shruder are recorded. They differ from the later interpretation of the form, as seen in CWF accession 1967-730, in the number and nature of the supports and arms, the means of adjustment, and the use of multiple wicks.Inscription(s)Crest of Bromfiet or Bronslet, Lancashire, engraved on face oflamp cover and lamp reservoir.Mark(s)Fully marked on underside of lamp reservoir; maker's mark and lion passant on underside of lamp cover, on underside of cylinder for arms, and on underside of each arm.ProvenanceVendor: Garrard & Co.
