DescriptionCandlestand, tripod, tilt-top: plain circular top with line inlay at top, following outline of edge, set in 3/4" from edge. This inlay of three bands of same size, outer band light, band in middle dark. Line inlay also encircles center of outside edge; this single-banded; light wood. Two parallel braces (screwed) to underside of top; between them, at center, is square block pinned at one end to braces; attached at other end to top by means of brass tea table lock. Top of pedestal squared; let into block and wedged from top. Pedestal turned in vase and ring pattern with slender, attenuated vase in center. Three cabriole legs dovetailed into base; end in pointed and shod snake feet.ProvenanceNo specific history known. Many "candlestands" and small stands listed in inventories; this one can not be pin-pointed. This piece one of a large group of chattels acquired en masse from now-deceased member of Glen-Sanders family in Scotia, New York. Glens and Sanders of British and (more recently) Dutch ancestry, early settlers in this area. Their children intermarried with Dutch settlers; some of furniture stamped with initials of Van Rensselaer and Elmendorf families. Stronghold of family remained in Scotia, contents of Glen-Sander s homsetead sold to CW in 1964
