DescriptiondishLabel TextPolygonal plates and dishes in pewter, mainly dating from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, clearly derived most directly from and were made to compete with refined earthenware examples. Polygonal pewter ones could not successfully compete with the flood of new lightly potted and gaily decorated ceramic choices.Inscription(s)Unidentified arms and crest engraved on face of rim within a rococo cartouche.Mark(s)Touch mark the crest of a demi-ostrich couped on a wreath bar framed by "RICHARD" above within a curved reserve, a pilaster at either side, and "KING" below on underside of rim (Cotterell 2750). Secondary marks (1) a rose with crown above with "GRACIOUS STREET" probably below within a domed reserve with a pilaster with ball above to either side on underside of rim adjacent to touch mark (partially indistinct; Cotterell 2750), (2) label "SUPERFINE/HARD METAL" within a subdivided and beaded rectangle on underside of rim opposite preceding marks (Cotterell 2750), and (3) quality "X" with crown above stamped between touch mark and large secondary mark on underside of rim.ProvenanceVendor: A.V.
