Blue tin glaze decorated in blue: in the well, Chinese peonies and bamboo surrounded by two concentric bands; on the rim, a trellis diaper band with four stylized book scrolls in reserves; on the base, the inscription "Richard Key of / Roylay in the Township / of Wrighton / 1750".Label TextThis delft plate is decorated with Chinese peonies and bamboo surrounded by two concentric bands and, on the rim, a trellis diaper band with four stylized book scrolls in reserves. The base is inscribed "Richard Key of Roylay in the Township of Wrighton 1750." Scholars Lipski and Archer recorded three plates dated 1749 or 1750 with the same decoration, but with inscriptions on the reverse that relate to other people and towns, none far from Liverpool. The Raylay mentioned on this plate is a hamlet in the township of Royton, which lies northeast of Manchester, between Oldham and Rochdale. "Wrighton," as it appears on the plate, approximates the local pronunciation of the name. Examples of this pattern at the Bristol Museum are in polychrome rather than blue and white.
