DescriptionMan's suit coat for court wear, made of purple wool broadcloth (fulled, napped and shorn wool), trimmed with cut steel buttons, matching breeches #2. Coat has standing collar, shaped front, narrow cuffs, pleated and vented skirt, and shaped pocket flaps with functional pockets having a buttoned inner flap beneath the shaped pocket flap. One-inch cut steel buttons, 25 total, sewn down fronts, on cuffs, beneath pockets, and back of coat. One buttonhole is cut open, but too small for present steel buttons; coat closes with two wire hooks and eyes at chest level. Lined with twill silk, quilted on chest, behind collar, and on shoulders for shaping.ProvenancePurchased from a dealer in Bath, England, who had the suit with a lot of nineteenth century clothing; one item was a black court dress hat with black feathers and a label of M. Slater & Coy. Hatters to His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, No. 50 Gracechurch Street, London, and an ivory color silk brocade waistcoat, etc. Possibly these all came from the same original wearer.
