DescriptionRound-bodied mug with loop handle and small foot ring. White tin glaze decorated in polychrome with half-length portraits of William and Mary framed within an arch between their heads the inscription "WMR."Label TextAlthough vessels bearing the portraits of William and Mary and William alone are by far the most numerous royal commemoratives in delft, few are dated and none as a coronation piece. Four plates and one mug (CWF accession 1959-375) are dated either 1691 or 1694. This caudle cup could date from any of the six years of the joint reign. Were the mug undecorated, on the basis of its shape one might be tempted to date it earlier in the second half of the seventeenth century. The London attribution is based on the runny glaze and the examples of similar form excavated in London.Inscription(s)"WMR"Mark(s)NoProvenanceGeoffrey E. Howard, ESQ.Tilley & Co., London
