DescriptionLarge side bead plane with flat chamfers which end with a line and gouge cut, and molded shoulder.Label TextBorn to a Mennonite family in Salford, PA in 1751, Huppert (sometimes Hupert or Hubert) Cassel served during the Revolutionary War as a Private in the 3rd. Company, 6th Battalion of the Philadelphia County Militia. After the war he is recorded working as a joiner by 1786.Cassel is also known as a schoolmaster and fractur artist, creating a number of pieces which are widely known today,. These can be found in the collections of the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville, PA and the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center of Pennsburg, PA.Mark(s)H•CASSEL in relief within a rectangle, is struck into the toe (Elliott, GAWP 5th ed., p.65, imprint B).ProvenanceJanuary 1997, purchased by Thomas Elliott (Westbrook, CT); 2024, given to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)
