DescriptionSalt-glazed stoneware storage jar: ovoid-shaped vessel with two extruded handles applied opposite each other horizontally at high shoulder; two applied ear-shaped strap handles painted with blue where they join the body; decorated with a stamped and cut swag and tassel border filled with blue; stamped letters on both sides of the vessel below the swag and tassel border: one side reads, "N * YORK" and the other reads, "COERLEARS / HOOK".Label TextThe story of free black potter and active abolitionist Thomas Commeraw and his time working at the Corlears Hook pottery in Manhattan continues to unfold as new research comes to light. This storage jar, although not marked "Commeraw," has all the of the attributes of pieces made during his tenure at the pottery. Together with our marked Commeraw storage jar 2009.900.2, this piece helps tell Commeraw's story more completely and provides another example of his work in a larger form with handles and exquisite decoration.Inscription(s)Stamped letters on both sides of the vessel below the swag and tassel border: one side reads, "N * YORK" and the other reads, "COERLEARS / HOOK".
