DescriptionSoup ladle with a downturned fiddle-shaped handle with pointed, flared shoulders and deep horizontal oval bowl with a double drop on its back.Label TextThis silversmith had a relatively short career in the trade. After working in Baltimore from 1809 until 1814, Osthoff moved to Pittsburgh where he worked until about 1818. Though made in his second location, it is interesting that Osthoff struck this ladle with his old Baltimore "Eagle's Head" assay mark. Owned by a number of people, the 1851-dated inscription attests to its continued value.Inscription(s)Front of handle engraved "EM" in sprigged script, with "Thompson.1851" in script on the back of handle. Both are later additions.
Mark(s)Back of handle struck with "A•OSTHOFF•" in relief within a rectangle, an eagle's head left in relief within an oval, and "PITTSBURG" in relief within a rectangle.ProvenancePurchased at auction from Adam A. Weschler & Son, Inc. (Washington, D.C.), May 24, 1970, Lot 876
