DescriptionCompote: the stepped and slightly flared circular foot rises to a bowl with a flared rim; the glaze has been wiped from the base of the foot; faint traces of gilding on the bowl.Label TextWhen opening his Philadelphia factory in 1826, William Ellis Tucker (1800-1832) hoped to establish a domestic porcelain industry that could compete with European imports dominating the American market. The factory offered everyday stock and completed custom orders, such as the one from which this compote originated.

The order for a large dinner and dessert service was likely placed as a gesture of financial support and familial pride by members of Tucker’s extended family. The entire set was “to be White and Gold,” and faint traces of gilding at the rim of the bowl show that the decorators closely copied the popular gold band design from imported French and English porcelain.

The Virginia Tuckers are one branch of the family that owned pieces from William’s factory. Ann Evelina Tucker (1789-1855), wife of Henry St. George Tucker (1780-1848) and daughter-in-law to St. George Tucker of Williamsburg, documents “Tucker china” in her will.
