DescriptionAgainst natural paper background. Very colorful figure. Hair black, eyes blue. Drop earing diamond shaped with ball at bottom. Turban is green with vertical yellow stripes, lavender ribbon and orange plume. At left hang two blue and red tassels embroidered in black. Around throat are two strings of orange beads holding a cross. Dress high waisted with large sleeves, lavender trimmed with orange with two pieces of what is probably intended to be decorative jewelry. Ruffle around neck of bodice pale green. Skirt yellow with red belt. Below figure are two sprays of stylized leaves and flowers done in bright shades of orange, blue, yellow, and pink.Label TextFound in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and sold to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller by Edith Gregor Halpert, this portrait was originally given to the Museum of Modern art in the 1930s. Stylistically it resembles theorem and other styles of painting popular amongst female hobbiests during the 19th century.ProvenanceEdith Gregor Halpert, Downtown Gallery, New York, NY; acquired from Halpert by Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; given by the latter to the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, in 1939; given by MoMA to CWF in June 1954.
