DescriptionSpoon: narrow elliptical bowl with rounded double drop and rococo shell on back; stem with rounded upper surface, flat below, terminating in upturned rounded end with short ridge.Label TextIt is ironic that John Vaughan first had leave to strike his touch in 1760, the year in which King George III acceded to the throne and the year before his marriage to Queen Charlotte, since Vaughan is particularly remembered for his handsome royal portrait spoons of these monarchs (see CWF accession 1984-143). He also made a large number of other spoons, such as this straightforward Hanoverian example with a stylish relief-cast shell on the back of its bowl.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)De facto touch mark a label with "I·VAUGHAN" within an oblong rectangle on underside of handle (Cotterell 4863). Secondary marks (1) pascal lamb framed by "MADE·IN" within a curved reserve above, a pillar to either side, and "LONDON" below on underside of handle (Cotterell 4863) and (2) quality "X" with crown above on underside of handle.
