DescriptionSpoon: oval bowl with rounded double drop on back, stem with upturned rounded end and short central ridge.Label TextHanoverian spoons had largely replaced wavy-end ones by 1730. The handle end was rounded off and turned upward with the discarded central projection of the handle end replaced by a central rib extending down the handle face. Bowls, for the most part, are of elongated oval form with early examples retaining a long rattail. Hanoverian spoons are even more three-dimensional than their antecedents with a more elegant profile, from the thickened and upturned end of the handle through the gradual taper of the stem, to an augmented shank that curves into the heel of the bowl with the long rattail on the underside that conveys and disperses the stress of the handle in the broad metal of the bowl.Inscription(s)Owner's initial "C" engraved on underside of handle.Mark(s)Touch mark "IW" with a wheat sheaf flanked by a mullet to either side above and a rose below within a vertical rectangle with an arched top on underside of handle (London Touch Plate III, 739; Cotterell 5314; Peal MPM 5314).
