DescriptionPine chair rail section consisting of a backboard with a flat bottom bead, a cap of torus molding, and a decorative section of back ogee. There are five paint sampling reveals that were used for analysis during the 1929 restoration of the building.Label TextThis chair rail section is from the mid-18th-century James Galt House that was built on property that would become part of the Public Hospital in 1770. Given to Colonial Williamsburg by Eastern State Hospital in 1929, the house was moved to Duke of Gloucester Street across from Bruton Parish Church until it was moved to Tyler Street in 1954. Chair rails were both functional and aesthetic by providing architectural definition to the room, while protecting the walls from damage by adjacent furniture.ProvenanceJames Galt House
