DescriptionPlate: circular plate with broad rim decorated with Imari colors. The center painted with the arms of Hatley impaling Reynolds for John Hatley and Isabella Reynolds: Azure a sword in bend argent, hilt and pommel or, the hilt in the dexter chief, between two mullets of six points pierced of the third; the crest, out of a ducal coronet, an antelope’s head or, armed, tufted and maned sable, pierced through the neck with a broken spear gules and the impaled coat of Reynolds, Azure a chevron ermine between three crosses crosslet fitched argent (armorial description from Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p. 180). The rim painted with an underglaze blue, iron red, and gilt border of vining flowers. The underside of the rim painted in blue and red with two prunus branches.ProvenanceOrdered around 1720 for John Hatley and Isabella Reynolds (Kirby Hall, Essex, England); in the collection of Christopher M. Weld (Essex, Massachusetts) until it was acquired by Angela Howard of Heirloom and Howard (Chippenham, Wiltshire, England) in 2023. With Angela Howard until October 2025 when she sold it to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, Virginia) where it remains to the present.
