DescriptionRectangular quilt composed of Nine-Patch squares alternating with unpieced patches, all set on point to create diamonds. The larger patches measure about 9 1/2 inches square and consist of red and white copperplate scenes in at least two different patterns, including harvest scenes, rural scenes, two people seated beneath an urn-like monument, scenes including a tent, and a building. The Nine Patch squares feature multicolor small-scale prints of abstracted flowers and stripes dating later than the copperplate scenes. Two copperplate patches are missing, revealing thin cotton batting. The two bottom corners are cut out in a curved shape to accommodate bed posts. The backing consists of three printed cottons including a small-scale sepia print in an abstract stripe, isolated pink flowers or fruit, and a stripe alternating pink lines with multicolor roses. The quilt is bound along the top with printed cotton. Bottom and sides once had an attached ruffle of faded red and white cotton that has been cut off.Label TextThis patchwork quilt combines textiles from two different centuries. Eighteenth-century copperplate printed rural scenes, sometimes called "toiles," alternate with later printed cotton patches from the 1830s to the 1850s. The quilt once had an attached ruffle along the sides and bottom that likely reached close to the floor.Mark(s)Inked number sewn to corner reads "V.72.296."ProvenanceDate unknown, Miss Katherine Little (Hampton, NH); Mrs. G.
