Whitish tin glaze decorated in blue with chinoiserie willow and rockwork flanking a scroll-bordered reserve inscribed "Porter"; on the handle an elaborate scroll design.Label TextThis delft mug is inscribed with the word "PORTER," a type of dark beer. Originally known as "porter's ale" or "porter's beer," it was malt brewed for porters and other laborers. In 1772 Tavern and Country Magazine stated that "hard working people delight in a kind of strong beer called porter, brown, clear, bitter, and wholesome." The London attribution for this mug is based on the shape and the deep blue decoration.Inscription(s)"Porter" inscribed on the front.Mark(s)NoneProvenanceA. & K. Embden, Londo
