After a military career that took him abroad to America (1776-1778) and India (1782-1786), Dodd returned to his family estate, Edge Hall in Cheshire, England. Military service remained a part of his life, and Dodd wore this coat as a commanding officer of the Western Cheshire Yeomanry, raised in response to tensions between England and France in the early 19th century.Inscription(s)Buttons are inscribed on front with "Inspectors of Yeomanry Volunteers" with central crown. On reverse, partially illegible "WESTALL". This probably refers to Firmin & Westall, buttonmakers at 153 Strand London ca. 1794-1812.Provenance1803-2018 (Edge Hall, Malpas, Cheshire, England); 2019 sold by Trevanion & Dean; purchased by dealer; purchased by Adam Coman (Boerne, TX); 2024-present, purchased by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)
