DescriptionSide chair with scrolled crest rail; center of crest rail carved with inverted C scroll flanked by leaves extending to carved ears over fluted stiles and a pierced splat with trellis pattern at center over carved volutes and strap work; trapezoidal seat with molded edge of seat rail and slightly rounded corners; slipseat (white pine, replaced) covered in modern yellow damask; cabriole front legs with foliate carved knees and ball and claw feet; rear legs taper slightly to squared feet; triangular, horizontal rear glue blocks of mahogany nailed inside seat frame; no front glue blocks.Label TextThis chair, with its unusual “trellis” splat design relates to chairs connected with the Edinburgh, Scotland wright, Alexander Peter. While splat designs do not on their own suggest an attribution to a specific maker or origin as many makers copied designs, this splat pattern appears to have been most prevalent in the Edinburgh area. More research on this may help support the attribution to Scotland or prove the dissemination of this splat design. The mahogany rear glue blocks inside the seat frame do point to a high-end British origin for the chair.ProvenancePurchased by donor at Swan Tavern Antiques, Yorktown, Virginia in 2010s.
