DescriptionGorget of tight, deeply concave crescent form, with a wired edge. Front bottom engraved with a scene of a Native American about to receive a winged peace pipe, being passed to him over a camp fire by a Quaker man, all below a tree and a human-faced sun.Label TextThough the shape of this gorget bears no resemblance to the original "Treaty of Easton" gorgets made by Joseph Richardson Sr. ca.1757, the engraved scene is reasonably faithful. Only one original gorget is currently known, in the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University (HSP.S-8-120).Mark(s)The right horn is struck with "IR" incuse, within a rectangle. This is spurious, and meant to copy the legitimate mark of Joseph Richardson, Sr. (1711-1784) of Philadelphia.
