DescriptionSilver goblet with a straight-sided square base topped by a circular foot. Its incurving neck, beaded at both ends and in the middle, supports a plain, urn-shaped body. The front is engraved with a vacant bright-cut oval, suspended from swags and ribbons above a foliate loop with up-curved ends.Label TextPreserved in superb condition, this rare example of a late 18th c. American goblet is more slender in appearance than others of the period. The band of beading wrapped around the narrow of its tall neck is snazzy feature, as is the now-vacant oval pendant engraved on the front of the body. Once bearing the initials of an owner, the letters were erased long ago, though unmistakable traces remain.Mark(s)Underside of foot struck with "I Lownes" in script relief within a rectangle, in two opposite corners.ProvenancePurchased from Eric Shrubsole, Ltd. (New York), on October 1, 1973.
