The exquisite running alkaline glaze on this jug is a style of decoration long associated with South Carolina, where the Ferguson family first started potting. William Ferguson was the son of South Carolina potter Charles H. Ferguson who had worked for Abner Landrum in the Edgefield district. After learning the trade from his father, William migrated to Georgia where he potted independently and with Jonathan Dial, another potter with roots in South Carolina.
