DescriptionJug: ovoid-shaped stoneware jug with short neck and flared mouth; extruded handle applied just below neck and shoulder; rows of concentric incised lines at shoulder; decorated all over with running alkaline glaze.Label TextThe Ferguson family of potters unveils an important story of the movement of pottery traditions through regions. The exquisite running alkaline glaze on this jug is a style of decoration long associated with South Carolina, where the Ferguson family first started potting. William Ferguson was the son of South Carolina potter Charles H. Ferguson who had worked for Abner Landrum in the Edgefield district. After learning the trade from his father, William migrated to Georgia where he potted independently and with Jonathan Dial, another potter with roots in South Carolina.
