DescriptionThis is a small almost square quilt probably intended for a child or doll. The front consists of one panel of printed patchwork fabric, consisting of squares, rectangles, and triangles featuring a variety of brown stripes, paisley, and floral patterns. The backing is made up of one panel of striped blue and brown cotton. The quilt has a knife edge. The quilting pattern is in outline, with 5-6 running stitches per inch. It is hand stitched.Label TextGiven its small size, this quilt was probably made for a child or a doll. While the quilt looks like it is made up of patchwork, with small bits of fabric pieced together, it is actually made up of a single piece of fabric made to look like patchwork. The fabric, consisting of paisley, floral, and striped prints in a variety of brown tones and in a mix of squares, rectangles, and diamonds, demonstrates how popular patchwork quilting was in the mid-nineteenth century.Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)NoneProvenanceEx.
