DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain teacup and saucer in the "Japan" pattern. The scroll handle is picked out in gilding on the exposed surfaces. The pieces are decorated in an all-over painted design depicting Asian inspired elements including fences, flowers, trees and rockwork. This design was executed in polychrome enamels including pink, green, red, blue and turquoise with large amounts of gilding. Both the cup and saucer are marked on the underside with an incised B.Label TextFlight and Barr was operated by Joseph Flight and Martin Barr from 1792 until 1804 in Worcester, England. The factory produced good quality useful and ornamental porcelain with particular focus on tea wares. This pattern, commonly referred to as "Japan" was very popular and exhibits high quality gilding.Mark(s)Both pieces are marked on the underside with an incised BProvenanceGift of Matthew J. Markoya of Seaford, Delaware. He purchased the cup and saucer in March, 2002 at Spences Bazaar in Dover, Delaware. The vendor has acquired them from a Florida estate sale in 2001.
