DescriptionGeared, crank-driven biaxial rolling mill for pressing "H" shaped lead cames for casement windows.Label TextGlaziers employed milling machines like this one to draw out lead cames used in the assembly of casement windows. Widely employed in the 17th century, leaded casements were surpassed in popularity by wooden sash windows during the 18th century. However, archaeological and architectural studies have shown that leaded casements continued in use and production for much of the 18th century as well, although in smaller numbers. The mills used for making the cames often featured a date that was repeated on the cames in the milling process. The present example is marked "1755," but does not impart a date into the cames it would produce.Mark(s)Punched dated "1755."ProvenancePurchased at David Stanley Auctions (Leicestershire, England), September 28, 1991, Lot 73.
