DescriptionSilver teapot: Narrow circular band foot supports a pear-shaped body with midband beneath a concave neck and paneled S-shaped spout terminating in a stylized bird's head; hinged domed cover with compressed ball finial; and C-shaped wooden handle (of later date) with scrolled thumb grip attached to tubular silver socket at upper juncture and curved, pointed socket at lower juncture (the latter also of later date)Label TextAlthough the identity of the silversmith who struck the “IB” mark on this teapot remains a mystery, its squat pear-shaped body is typical of the work of New York silversmiths of Dutch descent. Similar pear-shaped teapots of American origin include examples marked by the following New York silversmiths: Peter Van Dyck; Jacob Gerritse Lansing; Henricus Boelen II; Jesse Kip; Myer Myers; and Daniel Christian Fueter.Inscription(s)Engraved on base of teapot "R" over "I·E" and "PEE" in block letters. "PEE" is probably for Peter Edmund Elmendorf I (died by 1783) or his son, Peter Edmund Elmendorf (1764-1835). "R/I·E" is unidentifiedMark(s)Marked in relief "IB" in block letters within a rectangle on either side of handle (maker's identity unknown)ProvenanceGlen-Sanders Collection, Scotia, NY
