DescriptionGilded salver of shaped rectangular plan with cast reeded rim with cast winged cherub heads on chased diapered ground within a scrolled cartouche applied in center of sides and cast satyr's head on chased diapered ground within a similarly scrolled cartouche applied in center of ends. Rim applied to short inclined shaped sides to flat base; edge of base flat-chased with border incorporating scrolls, shells, flowers, and scaled and diapered sections on a matted ground; engraved coat of arms in center; body supported on four cast dolphin feet.Label TextThis oblong gilded salver of extremely fine workmanship is in the formal Huguenot style. The finely chased inner border frames the handsomely engraved royal arms in the center and serves as a transition from the heavy rim and sides. Originally one of a pair, it was almost certainly made for royal or ambassadorial use. The underside bears only the mark of Thomas Farren. Like other silver made for the crown, it was free of the obligation and expense of hallmarking.
