DescriptionDouble-domed cover with projecting flange with incised molded face and short bezel fitting within rim of body; cast openwork thumbpiece formed by two foliated S-scrolls soldered to lower dome of cover and to upper hinge plate; shaped lower hinge plate with molded face soldered to face of handle; hollow double-scroll handle of D-shaped section soldered to below rim and to lower section of body with shield-shaped terminal with rolled upper edge, molded face, and pendent drop; baluster-shaped body with incised molding at rim, drawn multiply-molded mid-band below center, and cast circular splayed foot with molded face and edge. Crest of a standing collared bird on a wreath bar engraved on face of body opposite handle.Label TextThis tankard was raised. The bottom and sides of the body were made from a single disk of silver hammered into shape. The foot, midband, handle, and hinge were all made separately and soldered into place. The lid was also hammered up from a disk and then attached to the handle by the cast thumbpiece and hinge.Inscription(s)Unidentified crest engraved on face of body opposite handle. Possibly a later addition.Mark(s)Marked in relief on base and inside cover: 1) "FW" in script letters within a rectangle [Grimwade 1990 #733]; 2) leopard's head crowned; 3) lion passant; and 4) date letter "E" for 1760-61.
