DescriptionMusic stand is composed of a flat, rectangular music support with attached ledge at bottom; top hinged to base board at underside of front; brace, attached to rear of top, fits into series of notches cut into base board; pair of candle wings slide out from either side under base board; crude, birdcage mechanism, consisting of three-sided box, fits over cylindrical pedestal with ring turnings at top and bottom; three cabriole legs terminating in flattened, snake feet descend from triangular base with ogee-shaped apron between each leg.

This stand is not adjustable for height and was probably intended only to be used while seated. This example of an eighteenth-century music stand features a birdcage, which is unique in this form of furniture. Typically found on round, tilt-top tea tables from this period, the birdcage mechanism allows the top of the table to fold down at a 90-degree angle, making it easier to store against a wall when not in use. A pair of candlestick supports slide out from under the base board to provide additional light for the musician during evening performances.Mark(s)None found
