DescriptionFour circular silverplate buttons with loops set in the center back.Label TextWhen Baldwin, Ives & Co. advertised "buttons of every description" in the 'Daily Richmond Whig' in January 1830, they weren't exaggerating- throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, buttons were made in a variety of materials, styles, and sizes, often depending on the garment they were intended for. In May 1831, F. & E. James & Co offered "buttons, best and common gilt, coat and vest buttons, youth's fancy vest and shell do; polished and common suspender do; polished bone, ivory and pearl shirt do; covered lasting do, &c &c."Provenance1945, given to the Valentine Museum (Richmond, VA); 2025-present, given to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA)
