DescriptionSilver monteith punch bowl (A) with removable crown-shaped rim (B).

(A) A deep, compressed hemispherical bowl set atop a round moulded foot, with an applied molding at rim shaped to accept flange at the bottom of the rim. Two cast lion masks are set on opposite sides of the bowl, each mounted with a swinging pendant handle of articulated bail type.

(B) Rim with everted sides, deeply shaped at the upper edge and embellished with six cast and applied satyr's masks above stylized foliate pendants. Fashioned from a long strip of silver, looped around and seamed behind a mask. A moulding applied above the lower edge forms a stop when it is set into the top of the body.
Label TextFaithfully copied from an original monteith made in London in 1733-1734 and owned in King and Queen County, Virginia, this vessel exemplifies the quality of work produced by Colonial Williamsburg's Silversmiths.Mark(s)Bottom struck with "I.CURTIS," "STERLING," "HANDWROUGHT," and "I•G," all in relief within rectangles.
