DescriptionBlack basalt medallion with large group of people approaching a small group of four people. Beneath this scene are the words 'REUNION DU SENA! ET DU PEOPLE A R 260". On reverse is a circle of people standing on a hill. A long line of people winds down the hill. Beneath are the words, "CREATION DES TRIBUNES A R 261".Label TextThis rare black basalt medallion produced by the partnership of Wedgwood & Bentley at the Etruria works in Staffordshire is part of a series, which copied bronze medals produced by the Dassiers, a Swiss family of numismatists and engravers. This example, number 8 in the series, depicts The Return of the People to Rome from the Sacred Mount on the obverse and The Creation of Tribunes on the reverse.

Medallions of this type were intended to be cabinet pieces. They were considered an important part of any gentleman's well-furnished library.
