Maker unknown; possibly by Klingenthal arsenal.Label TextUnlike the British, the French were constantly looking to improve not only their military firearms, but the means of affixing bayonets to them. After experimenting with rotating locking rings at the extreme rear of the bayonet's socket, they approved a new design in 1777.This cutting edge bayonet is the first to carry the mid-socket locking ring, and is believed to have been the weapon carried by French forces serving in America during the latter part of the Revolutionary War. The design proved so successful that Model 1777 bayonets were copied around the world, and the basic type remained in use until the end of the 19th century.
