DescriptionRectangular shawl of yellow silk with 13-inch wide border design on each end consisting of multicolored flowers (green, gold, brick, salmon, and purple), including purple flowers arranged in swag. Fringed ends.Label TextDuring the late eighteenth century, newly fashionable shawls added warmth to relatively thin neoclassical gowns. Shawls also enhanced the elegant lines and classical appearance of clothing inspired in part by Greek and Roman art. Although many shawls were imported from India, this silk example was woven at Spitalfields, then on the outskirts of London.
