DescriptionLower margin reads, "Job. Brandon pinxit./ Arn. Leers excudit. Hage - Comitum cum Privilegio./ Petr. a Gunst Sculp fit."Label TextThis elaborate portrait of Queen Mary (1662-1694) was considered a masterwork of engraving affordable to only a few. Yet the monarch's portrait also appeared on everyday objects such as coins, mugs, dishes, and spoons. Fragments from a range of vessels bearing Mary's likeness or initals have been found archaeologically at sites in Maryland, Massachusetts, and at nearby Jamestown. Reuniting Britain after a tumultuous period, Queen Mary II and her husband, King William III, jointly ruled Britain upon taking the throne in 1688, a moment known as the Glorious Revolution. The nearby College of William and Mary still bears the names of the monarchs who issued the charter that established the school in 1693.Mark(s)"Hage Comitum cum privlegio"ProvenanceBefore 1952, Katherine Murphy (New York, NY); 1952-present, purchased by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
