Label TextThis teapot bears the marks of two Baltimore silversmiths. It was made in the shop of Baltimore silversmith Charles L. Boehme (1774-1868), but his mark is over stuck three times with the mark used by Robert Monteith (active 1814-1849). Additionally, the teapot is stamped with the word “Sterling.” Robert Monteith was among the Maryland silversmiths who, in 1814, protested the establishment of an assay office in Baltimore.Mark(s)Marked in relief on edge of base: “C.L. BOEHME” in a rectangle. This mark is overstruck three times with “RM” in relief in a rectangle; also marked in relief in semi-script “Sterling” in a conforming reserveProvenanceSam Fisher, September 1969
