DescriptionLarge dish decorated in underglaze blue in the Kraak style. The decoration on the rim divided into twelve petal-shaped panels, each serving as a reserve for a flowering sprig springing from a grassy mound. The space between the lobes painted in alternating fish roe and diaper patterns. Central decoration of two phoenix birds amid rocks, prunus branches, and grass; the largest rock painted with two coins. Another bird soars above the rock. The central scene is encircled at the cavetto by a border of eight medallion/leaf motifs on a swirling-cloud ground.ProvenanceFrom the collection of William Goode Beville [Petersburg, Virginia] and received by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, Virginia) in 2018 as part of a bequest. It remains in the CWF collection to the present.
