Description1. Woman’s full quilted petticoat constructed of pink silk satin lined with thin, plain-woven white silk. The petticoat ties on both sides: the front waistband consists of off-white silk tape folded over the edges, dipping at the center front without any pleats; the rear waistband, consisting of the same silk tape, is folded over pleats. At the sides, gathered extensions form a wide-hooped silhouette that includes bound pocket slits. The upper portion of the quilting, done in a diamond pattern, is interlined with cotton batting. The lower portion of the quilting, which features a geometric floral lattice design, is corded. Hem raw edges turned to back and covered with same tape as waistband.

2. Matching stomacher is faced with pink satin and lined with thin, plain-woven silk. The quilting features a geometric floral motif within a field of diamond quilting. The diamonds are interlined with cotton batting while the flower is corded. The stomacher is shaped with a blunt point at center bottom and extensions at the sides, and may indicate that the gown with which it was worn had a loose open front. Raw edges are turned to the back and faced with pink satin strips stitched down. It is likely that the stomacher was altered or constructed at a later date from pieces of the original gown or bodice.ProvenanceFrom the Dewitt Clinton Cohen Collection; Purchased by Cora Ginsburg from Avis Garner in 1970.
