DescriptionRectangular quilt pieced and appliqued in a design of 25 green and yellow-orange (so-called "cheddar") sunflower sprigs with brown-predominating printed round centers, all on white ground. The quilt is bordered on all four sides with an undulating vine in green and orange. The quilting is worked with running stitches at 7 to 10 stitches per inch. The white cotton backing is brought to front to form a narrow (1/8") edge finish. The printed textiles at the centers of the sunflowers and leaves appear to date between 1860 and about 1880. The quilt is signed with red outline stitches on the back with CMD, the initials of the presumed maker, Carrie May Dyche. Because Carrie signed the initials of her maiden name, she must have made the quilt before her 1907 marriage to George O. Thrush.Label TextThis quilt originally belonged to Carrie May Dyche (ca. 1871-1956), whose initials CMD are stitched to the back lining. She spent her early years in Morgan, West Virginia, but moved with her parents to Rockingham County, Virginia. She was married about 1907 to George O. Thrush. The couple lived Mineral, West Virginia, before moving to Cumberland, Maryland by the early 1920s.
