DescriptionChinese export porcelain rectangular dish with canted corners decorated in the center with the arms of Samuel Vaughan and his wife, Sarah Hallowell of Boston. The arms executed in polychrome and the border of the dish embellished with four floral sprays, one in the center of each side, in opaque enamels. The cavetto bordered with a chain. The arms are of Vaughan, Sable a chevron between three boys' heads couped at the shoulders argent, crined or and enwrapped about the neck with as many snakes, impaling Hallowell, Argent on a chevron sable three bezants; crest, a boy's head as in the arms.Label TextThis dish is from one of at least three Chinese porcelain armorial services made Samuel and Sarah Vaughan. Vaughan was an English merchant who owned estates in England, Jamaica, and America. He married Sarah Hallowell of Boston in 1747 and together they moved to Philadelphia in 1783. Vaughan was a supporter of American independence, friends with Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, served as vice president of the American Philosophical Society, and designed the garden at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall).ProvenancePurchased from Heirloom & Howard, Ltd., West Yatton, England.
