DescriptionLead-glazed earthenware jar with tapered shoulders and a long wide neck. Lug handles are attached to either side of the jar just above the shoulders. The neck is decorated with three applied bands of ruffled clay, which are evenly spaced between the handles and the rim of the jar. The entire pot is covered in a red clay slip and dabs of dark green.Label TextEdward William Farrar was born in 1807 or 1808 in Monkton or Middlebury, Vermont. He was the son of potter Caleb Farrar and Sarah Parker. Edward married Melissa Grave of Keene, New York. It is unclear how many children they had together, but they had at least one son, who later served in the Civil War. In April of 1830 Edward purchased land from Rufus and James Wainwright, which was a lot "where the pottery shop now stands" according to the deed. Edward sold the pottery to his father-in-law Nahum Parker in March of 1839 for $200.00. Based on census records, it appears that Edward left Middlebury in 1839 as he was not included in the 1840 census.
