DescriptionA cityscape with horizon line about 2/3-3/4 high in the picture, a cloud-studded sky above. A broad avenue thronged with pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles runs diagonally from lower left to upper right through the composition. Multi-story buildings line the far side of the street. A small pond is at far left, while part of another body of water (a canal?) appears at far right and, on it, a large boat. In the distance, at the end of the avenue at far right, stands a distinctive skeletal structure, presumably representing the Eiffel Tower. The streets are a pale buff color, the building facades various pastels.The flat, black-painted frame is a modern, non-original addition.Label TextThis is the later of two Parisian street scenes created by Kozlowski. The earlier, painted ca. 1940, is more static in its composition and relies more heavily on the artist's favored technique of mosaic-like patterning. Paris No. 2 incorporates some such patterning in, for instance, the windows of the buildings. Yet its composition is clearly dominated by the bold diagonal thrust of the avenue, a feature that makes the painting one of Kozlowski's most dynamic.
