DescriptionGray salt-glazed stoneware alligator figure decorated with blue spots and detailing around the eyes, mouth and along the back. The head of the figure has an open mouth showing white teeth and is twisted back towards the tail; the tail is flipped up in the air and almost touches the head. Incised on the base are Billy's initials "BH" as well as the encircled number 53 (this indicates the kiln firing that this piece came from).Label TextBilly Ray Hussey is a contemporary potter who works in a vernacular tradition informed by historic prototypes. Hussey was born in Robbins, North Carolina in 1955. From an early age he observed and learned potting techniques from the working potters near his home. He participated in every stage of vessel construction from digging the clay to loading the kilns. This eventually led to Hussey's development as a potter who uses indigenous technology and materials in his work.
