DescriptionTin -glazed earthenware plate with decoration in red and blue. The border design around the rim is in red and depicts geometric designs alternating with floral designs interupted by lozenge-shaped reserves. The border is flanked with lines of blue. The inner border is also in red and of geometric design with flanking lines of blue. The central ornamentation is all in red and depicts a vase of flowers with two flying insects, one on either side.Label TextFragments of this pattern in red and blue were found during excavations of the Vauxhall Pottery in Lambeth, now part of London. They were decorated in the same linear manner as this plate and with similar leaves and flowers. The Vauxhall pottery was owned by the Chilwell family and then by Samuel Swabey. During the period that this plate was produced, the factory was operated by Mary Chilwell (1731-1753).ProvenanceTroy D. Chappell, Williamsburg, Virginia
