DescriptionBlack-glazed tankard of slightly tapering cylindrical form with a flaring foot and an incurved rim above a band of horizontal ribbing interrupted at the back by the ribbed loop handle. The front is cold-painted with a bust-length portrait of General John Manners, Marquis of Granby (1721-70), wearing an iron-red coat with blue and ochre lapels over a white shirt and a blue and ochre waistcoat. This is within a brown-ground cartouche edged with yellow and green scrolls between a gilt floral spray on either side. Note: The portrait on this mug was taken from an engraving by Richard Houston, published in 1760 after the original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Polychrome decoration.Label TextThe portrait painted on this tankard is that of General John Manners (1721-1770) the Marquis of Granby. He was the eldest son of the 3rd Duke of Rutland. He served as Colonel of his own regiment against the rebellion of 1745. He was Colonel of the Blues in 1758. He served in Flanders at the Battle of Minden, C-in-C British contingent 1759. He returned to England in 1760. He was very popular. He was painted twice by Sir Joshua Reynolds. The painting depicted on the mug is a copy from an engraving by Richard Houston after one of the Reynolds's paintings. The print was published in 1760.ProvenanceHarry H. Coon Collection
