DescriptionShoe buckle, one of pair, made of silver facing over copper with iron-steel back pieces. Rectangular pierced guilloche with single flower in each corner superimposed on oval outer frame with chased feather-edge decoration.ProvenanceProbably owned by John Lyle, Essex County, Virginia, a shoemaker whose ledger diary and 1780s discharge papers from the British army survived with the buckles. Diary and discharge papers are in the CWF John D. Rockefeller Library.1765-1775
