DescriptionSilver teaspoon with upturned fiddle handle, pointed shoulders, oval bowl, and no backdrop; engraved crosswise in feathered script "V" on face of stem end. Marked lengthwise on back in relief "W&V" within a rectangle (Hollan b).Label TextThe Lynchburg, Virginia, firm of Williams & Victor was in business for more than thirty years, from 1814 until 1845. Partners Jehu Williams, Sr. (1788-1859) and John Victor (1793-1845) were active participants in both silversmithing and clock making (see CWF tall case clock 1930-53).Inscription(s)Engraved crosswise in feathered script "V" on face of stem end.Mark(s)Marked in relief lengthwise on back "W&V" within a rectangle (Hollan b).ProvenanceAccording to family tradition, this spoon belonged to the Waller family of the Waller House in Williamsburg. However, the Wallers had long since left that property by the time the spoon was made. The engraved V on the handle suggests original ownership in a family whose name begins with that letter.
