DescriptionA full-length depiction of a man with a beard and side whiskers standing in a red coat; a red, decorated (fireman's) top hat; a lettered short blue cape; blue trousers; and black shoes. His back is to the viewer, his proper right foot raised at the heel, and he points to the right with his proper right hand while looking to the left. An article that appears to be a brass speaking trumpet is tucked beneath his proper left arm. A dark oblong object (identity uncertain) hangs behind him below the mouth of the trumpet. Lettering appears in the lower margin reserve.
The 3/4-inch gilded and molded cyma recta frame is a modern addition.
Inscription(s)"FAIR MOUNT" appears in yellow watercolor block-style lettering in a band on the blue cape over the figure's back. "The Fireman of Philadelphia" is handwritten in upright script in pencil beneath the image.ProvenanceFound in New York, NY; Edith Gregor Halpert, Downtown Gallery, New York, NY; on 10 July 1931, bought from Halpert by Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., by whom given to CWF.
